The running test of the superconducting magnetic levitation (maglev) railway is planned on the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line, from the spring of 1997. Three vehicle bodies and five trucks for the first formation have already been delivered and completed. Hitachi have joined the design and manufacture project of the trucks and vehicle bodies for the second formation, which will utilize the manufacture experience of the first test vehicles. Because the truck is the supporting section for the vehicle body and the superconducting magnet (SGM) - rigidity, strength, and weight reduction are all required. To satisfy these requirements, the truck frame is made of aluminum (Al) welded construction. Additionally, for the body, it is necessary to install a magnetic shield in order to decrease the magnetic field in the passenger room and to reduce the weight - while achieving noise reduction, high pressure-proof, and high rigidity, which are required for running vehicles at high speed. Therefore, the vehicle structure is primarily composed of Al honeycomb panels of which an experimental body has been constructed for optimum design.
