The ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) is a system for automatic control of vehicle's longitudinal motion in standard traffic situations. The driver is still responsible for emergency brakes or evasive maneuvers, respectively in order to avoid collision, but he gains reaction time due to automatic brake initiation. As the ACC takes a delimited part of the driving task, it relieves the load on the driver and supports him. As a result also a smoother traffic flow, improved flow rate, less fuel consumption and pollution, and safer driving can be expected. Based on the experiments with a coach design principles for ACC systems are presented. The controller performance of the test system is described using characteristic criteria developed for ACC systems.
