There is a demand to predict and optimize the mechanical powertrain system, especially in transient driving situations. The motive for this is strengthened by new laws restricting emissions, increased focus on fuel consumption and a general urge for reduced development time. This work presents another essential piece in the chain necessary to do so. In addition, since driving cycle simulations require a total, often complex, driver-vehicle-road system, a modular approach alleviates changing individual components, allowing a rapid comparison between different powertrains possible. It is concluded that different submodels can be used in different phases of simulations. When building a new system, existing simple submodels can be used or, in some cases, even omitted. As the demand for model agreement grows and when trimming the model for speed and stability, better models can replace the simpler ones. It is suggested that this modelling technique can be used to compose strategies for example: automated gear shifting, the possible need for electronic filtration of driver signals to reduce emissions, the difference between drivers in resulting emissions etc.
