The general approach of Monte-Carlo simulation of stochastic flows is applied to some aspects of road traffic modelling. Recent growth in road traffic has led to increasing levels of congestion, pollution and accidents. One of the proposed solutions is the implementation of Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT) in the areas of traffic control, driver information and vehicle guidance. An important part of ATT is modelling and simulation of complex traffic phenomena. This paper presents an overview of some aspects of road traffic modelling and describes the development of a particular application of the Monte-Carlo simulation approach at the Hirst Division of GEC-Marconi Materials Technology Ltd. This is designed to provide an understanding of the connection between the driver's behaviour and the phenomena leading to congestion and traffic breakdown.
