The high performance military aircraft has proceeded down the path to an 'all glass' cockpit with larger and larger area head down displays. The transition from electro-mechanical instruments was started with cathode ray tube (CRT) displays and accelerated with active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCD). Now, another technology, field emission, is poised to enter the cockpit with promises of better performance than it's two predecessors. Field emission display (FED) devices will soon be available for civilian and commercial applications. It is crucial that applications such as high performance large area military aircraft displays be examined up front before fabrication decisions preclude construction of such devices. It is also important that experience gained, problems encountered, and lessons learned from insertion of CRT and AMLCD technology be considered.
