Current trends in the design of vehicle power systems, land and air, involve the integration of computer monitoring and control of individual system loads to increase overall power system efficiency. Manufacturers of power control systems are looking to TEAM with relay manufacturers, in a concurrent engineering environment, to package power relays, with current sensing electronics, etc., as line replaceable units (LRUs) that mate mechanically and electrically to the power system manufacturer's equipment. This paper presents a case history concerning one such effort. Discussions include design challenges encountered and how these challenges evolve into a functioning design. Discussions also include the observed effects of concurrent engineering during the design activity, both internally and externally with the customer and vendors.
