Multimedia services provided via mobile satellite links of increasing interest for broadband ship-to-shore communications. In many allications, a high portability of the ship-board multimedia terminal equipment is required. Because from below deck locations direct access to the space segment is not feasible, the use of an above deck satellite gateway terminal interconnected to a local radio system providing the cordless extension of the satellite service has been investigated. Ship-board radio transmission trials showed spatial and temporal fading distributions close to Lognormal and RICE, respectively, at excess attenuation coefficients in the range 3 to 8. It is concluded that ship-board radio transmission supporting multimedia applications is feasible.
