Increase of the diameter of the wafer for Si devices and introduction of irradiation technology with neutron beam and gamma ray, the capacity of thyristors and GTOs have been largely progressed. Such devices have made the realization of high power converters possible. Utilization of self-commutated converters based on them is remarkable. Their capability to control power flow has enlarged their application fields in industrial drives, railway tractions, electrical power systems and research installations for high energy physics. Further developments are being carried out for the applications of superconducting systems and flexible a.c. transmission systems.
