The serial data communication system CAN is used successfully in a broad range of applications in the automotive and process automation industry and is still meeting growing interest. Discussions with CAN users have shown that there is a need for clarification concerning the distinction between CAN Protocol and CAN Physical Layer. In particular it should be made clear which important contributions to the data integrity are made both by the layout to the physical bus and by the protocol mechanisms of error detection and fault confinement implemented in CAN. The paper concludes with explanations concerning the data integrity of the CAN bus, its consequences for the data integrity of the entire electronic control system and a comparison with the data integrity of other industrial systems.
