One hundred years ago, electric vehicles (EVs) were more common than internal combustion engine-powered cars (ICEs). The longer range possible on a tank of gasoline compared to the range of a lead-acid battery pack, however, led to the ICEs' domination. Today the cities of the U.S. and the world are becoming unlivable due to polluted air caused mainly by the emissions of ICEs. A second concern should be the eventual non-availability and cost of gasoline due to the finite, non-renewable, and diminishing world's supply of oil. This paper reports on three programs to achieve better EVs. The advanced Ovonic Nickel-Metal-Hydride batteries offer double the range of the current lead-acid batteries, and have many other advantages. Second, this paper will provide an update on the efforts of GN International's (GBI), to help companies in China produce a lower cost battery and EVs. Third, is a report on Hawaii's EV demonstration program. EVs have a promising future as more acceptable, economic, and an important environmental replacement for ICEs.
