As a massive, high-speed transportation system for both passengers and freight, railways must first seek to ensure the safety and high reliability of train operation. On the basis of these fundamental requirements, it is neccessary to challenge the following tasks, that is, further improvements in function, such as speed, comfort, and convenience; further economization, such as in maintenance, energy consumption and resources; and further reduction in noise, vibration, and other environmental effects. Although some factors among these are contradictory, they must be dealt with concurrently by optimization of systems, application of new technologies, and so on. This special issue introduces recent Hitachi technologies for such areas of the railway system as rolling stock, electric power supply, signaling and safety installations, and information control. In this paper, the abovementioned tasks will be developed, together with an overall image of the challenges and our approach to them, relating to the subjects of the other papers in this issue.
