The successful use of electric vehicles in urban areas will depend on having the infrastructure available to charge and service these vehicles. One component of the necessary infrastructure will be charging stations for emergency or daytime recharge away from home. It is desirable to charge from stored energy resources during the day to avoid adding to peak electric load for this energy. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) is an attractive option for surch storage because of its high efficiency, low maintenance, and flexibility. The storage unit can also be used for other utility functions when not used for vehicle recharging. This paper presents some of the characteristics of a SMES system at a size of 1 MWh that could be used for electric vehicle recharging.
