The recent development of electronic technology has been remarkable. In Japan, the number of vehicles equipped with navigation systems is increasing. In 1990, we developed a commercially-based navigation system with map-matching technology. In response to the desire for more useful information, we have improved the system. This new model described in this paper has highly accurate location detection and multiple information sources. It shows the accurate position of the vehicle on a CRT map display, which uses a refined map-matching method incorporating a compact rotation sensor vibration gyroscope. It can also provide useful information such as the location of hotels, golf courses, and so on. It can play CD-ROM discs based on the CDCRAFT standard by which software vendors produce multimedia entertainment. The system can also display road information from the roadside radio beacons, and can calculate and show the route between the current location and the destination by using specific CD-ROM discs. This system has a private memorandum function which allows for data, name, phone number, memo text, and the preset position the memory is provided through selecting a touch key or by using an electronic pocketbook to transfer the memorandum. This navigation system has been installed in Mitsubishi's 1992 GALANT and ETERNA models.
