In this paper the authors describe ALEX, a system which uses knowledge representation and AI techniques to support several phases of the design process of aircraft electrical systems. The authors focus, in particular, on the application of algorithms and heuristics to solve constraint satisfaction problems and on its integration with a conventional CAD tool. Moreover, the authors discuss how this system, thanks to its effective integration of several parts of the design process, can help engineers to produce better electrical configurations in a shorter time.
