The bipolar Darlington transistor plays a dominating role since the replacement of the technical interrupter in automotive ignition systems. Unfortunately, this device is characterized by a high drive current which generates power dissipation in the driver IC. This results in a problem for new ignition concepts which have no ignition distributor but a dedicated coil for each cylinder, because the driver's chip area increases dramatically. A novel solution is the replacement of the Darlington high-voltage switch by an IGBT (Insulated gate Bipolar Transistor) which can be controlled like a MOSFET, requires no drive power and offers higher current density than the Darlington.
