Electromagnetic shielding is extremley important in achieving electromagnetic compatibility of subsystems and systems in their operating environments. Higher shielding will be needed in the future since the severity of the environment is continually increasing. An accurate shielding theory is needed to determine the shielding effectiveness of a conductive barrier to radiation from antennas. Certain apparent anomalies in the present electromagnetic shielding theory of a conductive barrier to radiations from an antenna are described. The rereflection loss parameter of the present theory is reviewed and the question of its existence is resolved. By using both transmission line and electromagnetic wave propagation theories, it is shown that the rereflection loss occurs in both transmission lines and conductive barriers. The limited applicability of the present theory only to plane wave radiations from antennas is discussed.
