This paper decribes work carried out as part of the microwave sub-project of the CEC DRIVE DACAR programme. The aim of this work was to develop and test a prototype millimetre wave communications link for road traffic applications. It is concluded from the trials results that 60 GHz band millimetre wave links can indeed be used as the basis for a comprehensive RTI system. Our experiences suggest that FSK rather than DPSK modulation should be used in any commercial system. A reduced transmitter power should also be considered as the effects of fading appear to be less significant than expected. Further development of the relevant technologies, such as MMICs (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) and conformal patch arrays, will be required to enable links to be manufactured on a commerical basis.
