The move towards more technologically complex mission systems, for handling increased mission sophistication, coupled with limits on available manpower resources, is leading to increased crew workload and more lengthy training of operators for many existing and future aircraft. DRA Aerospace has a research programme to investigate how expert systems technology can be exploited to relieve this problem by enabling the development of decision support aids to reduce crew workload and improve operator performance. It examines the technology and its capabilities, and builds specific application projects to demonstrate the benefits of the technology. One aspect of this programme is the development of a means for building validated expert systems that can be reliably deployed. Expert systems have special properties which complicate the validation process, such as their capability to express complex decision-making processes. They require all participants in system development to have a shared basis on which to set and assess acceptable standards.
