In May 1986 Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc. Joplin, Missouri was awarded the contract to deliver nickel-hydrogen batteries to support the Eutelsat II Spacecraft program by Aerospatiale/Cannes Frances. This contract required the design, development, analysis, fabrication, assembly, test and documentation of two test batteries (engineering and qualification models), three sets of flight hardware (two batteries per flight set), and one battery assembly for flight spare. These batteries are designed to support a geosynchronous orbit mission seven years in duration minimum with a depth of discharge ranging to a maximum of 74 % the nameplate capacity. This design boasts an energy density in excess of 49 WH/kg and occupies a volume of only 0.0729 m3 (60 x 45 x 27 cm). The following outlines the major design features of this battery system and the results obtained from qualification and acceptance level testing at Eagle-Picher.
