SOLACOS is a nationally funded german technology program for terrestrial system verification of coherent laser communication systems based on Nd:YAG lasers. Based on an ESTEC funded system design study, SOLACOS started in late 1989. The main objective was the evaluation and breadboarding of critical components and subsystems. Major items were the PAT-subsystem-breadboard, the development of an optical Costas-loop receiver and advanced Nd:YAG transmitter technology. The aim is to build two engineering-level demonstration terminals for detailed evaluation of an optical high-performance data transmission system within three years. This paper describes the system design requirements, the SOLACOS design and present subsystem results.
