Earlier this year the successful bids to be a part of the NASA Earth Observing System (Eos) programme were announced. Eos is a major NASA initiative to detect and monitor Global Change using a series of very large polar orbiting platforms and a large suite of sensors. The first polar platform is due to be launched sometime in the mid to late 1990s and the plans call for an operational earth observing satellite system which will provide at least a decade of continuous data. Australian proposals included both large scale interdisciplinary science programmes and individual proposals to be included in the Working Groups for individual sensors. Australia had a number of proposals accepted for inclusion in the Working Groups for individual sensors. Australia had a number of proposals accepted for inclusion in the Eos project and a remote sensing applications programme concered with climate and fisheries was chosen to be a part of the International Interdisciplinary Working Group. This paper will briefly review the concept of Eos and will review the objectives of the successful IIWG project and applications of Eos data to the management of Australian natural resources. It will discuss the scientific issues for Australia and will place involvement in Eos in the context of the development of space science in Australia.
