The subject of the research covers some problems connected with the design and exploitation of hybrid shunting locomotives to be used on non-electrified tracks of shunting yards of Polish railways (PKP) and factory railways. An analysis and exploitational tests of engine loads in diesel shunting locomotives running on some chosen stations have been performed. The results of these tests are presented as systematized and average load characteristic curves of diesel locomotives shunting locally on shunting yards, railways and factory railways, shunting at a hump as well as other shunting tracks. Parameters and characteristic curves of some chosen engine supply sources of traction hybrid locomotives, e.g. traction secondary cells and diesel generators have been determined. Introducing some dependences to calculate load energy and usability percentage of cells' nominal energy working in the supply units of traction hybrid locomotive has been made possible by determining energy characteristic curves defined in unit function of unload power.
