Color perception phenomena which were popularized by Edwin Land in 1959 can be extended and applied to the task of fabricating color matrix addressable displays for automotive instrument panel applications. Application of color perception effects can reduce the number of individual pixels required to form a multicolor display having a given density of 'color elements'. A corresponding reduction in the number of line drivers also occurs. Alternatively, if the total number of pixels and line drivers is held constant, the effective resolution of the display can be increased by 50 %. The use of color perception phenomena offers new opportunities for the efficient design of color flat panel displays.
