PROMETHEUS and DRIVE are two complementary European programs for joint research in the area of future traffic. They both focus on the comprehensive application of informatics and telecommunication as means for overcoming the weak points of today's road traffic with respect to: safety, efficiency/economy and traffic management. These objectives are one dimension for comparison of the two and other traffic related research programs like CARMINAT, TELEATLAS a. s. o. The other dimension is application from full transport systems until policy level and technology. In this regard PROMETHEUS as an industrial program is mainly dedicated to full transport systems and development of electronic hardware, but is also active in the area of systems development - which means in effect infrastructure based systems - and investigates scenarios for future traffic. DRIVE stands for Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe which already indicates the main area of interest, namely road infrastructure.
