This paper describes a new method for estimating the arc discharge rate using the noise currents flowing through the pantograph. The estimation principle is based on the statisitcal discrimination of the arc durations from the digital measurement values of the BPF envelope responses to the noise currents in the VBF band at the single frequency. For verifying the validity of this method, the experiment is performed by using the sliding-contact apparatus which is well known as a model of the current collector of an electric car.
