The very strong correlation between the backscattered solar radiation to space and that transmitted to the surface of a cloudy atmosphere allows rather accurate estimates of the total solar radiation reaching the surface (global radiation) from satellite data. Within the project SUNSAT, the global radiation for Africa and southern Europe will be determined for a period of 2 complete years (1985-1986). These estimates have to be verified with as many ground based measurements as available. The first year of data is now processed and first preliminary results will be presented here.
