Microcomputer based solid state motor controllers allow loads to be monitored during starting and controlled within acceptable kVA limits. This ability to control starting kVA per horsepower enhances use of limited available generating capacity on offshore oil rigs and other applications with locally generated power. A solid state controller can be a cost effective alternative to adding generating capacity or increasing generator sizes in certain applications. Care must be taken in determining loading of the generators and torque required to accelerate the loads. Applications such as fans, pumps and compressors with quadratic type load torque/speed curves are good candidates for this type of evaluation, since the initial torque requirements for starting this type of load is low. In addition, solid state controllers can provide flexibility and additional protection on these applications.
