Advanced semiconductor technology derived from the VHSIC program and the flexibility offered by various semicustom IC approaches are central to future improvements of on-board avionics and satellite systems, With the revolution in power, size and cost of computing resources, techniques in real-time signal processing must be rethought to embrace approaches previously dismissed as too computation intensive. To ease the bandwidth bottleneck that exists in transmitting data from a satellite for ground processing, future 'smart' sensors will sport VHSIC signal processors connected via fiber optic links.
