Electronics may be one of the survivors of DOD budget battles. White US military spending will experience its third straight year of net decreases the electronics share of DOD procurement and R and D will reach a projected 41 percent in 1997. The EIA study also highlights some changes in the DOD market environment. Foreign participation in the DOD market-particulary European - is expected to increase. The EIA study is segmented by the following major weapon system platforms; aircraft, missiles, space, research and development, communications ships and other programs. Aircraft account for the largest weapon systems procurement budget with about 9 billion dollars for electronics. In the missile area, procurement funding will decline through the early period of the forecast, but it is expected to climb 10 percent over the next ten years. The EIA expects the communications procurement budget to increase from 6.8 billion dollars in 1987 to 8.3 billion dollars in 1997. In regard of the strip market EIA anticipates the total electronic content to drop from 5.7 billion dollars in 1987 to about 3.8 billion dollars in 1997.
