In what types of corridor would high speed maglev be more attractive than its two high speed competitors - air service and high speed rail. The amount of public financing needed by these three modes, their environmental and land use impacts, their proven commercial service, if any, and their transportation capacity will be key issues in any decision to expand high speed service in a given corridor. This paper examines the basic economic performance of these three modes in three corridors based on the proposed Las Vegas to Los Angeles corridor to determine the extent of public financing required. From these variations of distance and traffic volume, conclusions are drawn on the types of corridor that would be most suited to Maglev service.
