This paper presents an overview of ESA's activities in the field of satellite-based aeronautical services and in particular its experimental project PRODAT. PRODAT will provide low data-rate, data-only services for aircraft fitted with hemispherical antennas. The overall system architecture is examined with emphasis on: The multiple access scheme employed, code division multiple access (CDMA), on the air-to-ground link. (A time division multiplexed (TDM) carrier is used on the ground-to-air link). The original coding techniques, based on the use of Reed-Solomon block codes. The overall link protocols that are implemented to interface airborne ACARS/AIRCOM data acquisition systems with the SITA data network. The first system demonstration is planned to start in April 1987, and the results of preliminary tests will be reported herein.
