This paper will show how a multiple transmission media approach supports the overall capabilities being developed in the Air Force Project Forecast II technology thrust PT-14, Survivable Communications Networks. Technologies will be developed or expanded to provide capabilities for a node to automatically and intelligently change a network path through use of transmission media, and to increase the survivability of the connectivity by employing the use of other networks. This capability makes it difficult for any adverse effects to completeley isolate a node because of the richness of connectivity. Additional capabilities will include achieving maximum traffic throughput with minimum user delay by adapting to changing propagation conditions, network topology changes, and system loading.
