Modern Diesel engines fitted with mechanical fuel injection systems benefit from the use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as a means of reducing NOx exhaust emissions. This paper describes a digital electronic system for controlling EGR which can be very simply used with today's mechanical fuel injection pumps. Designed for passenger car applications, the system requires a minimum of inputs from the engine to achieve very flexible control of the EGR valve. The paper also describes the way in which the system can be expanded to modify the timing control of the mechanical fuel injection pump in order to further minimise exhaust emissions. The system is planned to be introduced into the European Diesel passenger car market before 1989 and the paper indicates the typical improvements in emissions which can be expected from typical indirect injection Diesel engines.
