The operation of this adaptive ignition system has been described previously in more detail. This paper describes further work that has been undertaken with emphasis on emissions and knock control. The system design is such as to allow conventional and hybrid construction techniques. Both approaches are suitable for under-bonnet installation. A printed wiring board is used with surface mount components placed on both sides, together with a number of wire ended devices. This approach is suitable for mounting on the vehicle bulkhead and similar positions. For those applications requiring mounting on the engine, thick film hybrid technology is used. This enables the higher temperature and mechanical stress levels to be withstood reliably. Sophisticated signal processing and control strategies enable ignition timing to be controlled to provide the optimum trade off between fuel economy, emissions and knock using existing low cost sensors and with the minimum of applications effort.
