New architectures for controlling autonomous mobile robots were developed. An autonomous vehicle was designed and developed as a testbed to study navigation and collision avoidance using a 3-D optical vision system. The optical unit provided the primary sensory input for these tasks. A rule-based expert system was designed to control the 3-D vision system for object recognition. The expert system controller determines if video information received from the camera is useful for object identification.
