The initial generating system for the U.S. Space Station is a hybrid using both photovoltaic arrays and solar dynamic systems. The aggregate power that can be demanded exceeds the generating capacity, and so, loads are adjusted to match generation subject to transmission capacity. Because electrical power system management is a mature terrestrial discipline, tried and true algorithmic decision aids for power dispatching can be directly applied to Space Station. Electric utilities use experienced dispatchers for integrating these analyses into operational decisions. Aboard Space Station, autonomous operation is needed to decrease both airborne and ground support costs. Augmenting the terrestrial approach with expert systems to direct the analyses and to integrate the results into operational decisions is proposed for this task. To become totally autonomous, the power system will require the intelligence to: schedule power, allocate energy, diagnose failure causes, propose goals, prepare plans, evaluate consequences, and select the best plan for execution.
