The Advanced Multi-Purpose Support Environment (AMPSE), used as a tool to support the debugging, verifying and validity of embedded computer software executing in a real-time simulated environment, fulfills the two ESIP objectives. The AMPSE is different from traditional support environments, test stations and integration support facilities because it is designed to be modified and enhanced as the weapon system it supports is modified and enhanced. This is accomplished by using a modular building block approach to the development of the support environment. The AMPSE is also capable of supporting multiple versions of a single weapon system or even multiple weapon systems. The goal of the AMPSE is to completely support a weapon system's software throughout the life of the weapon system at a reduced cost and with maximum capability. The Air Force sponsored Embedded Computer Resources Support Improvement Program (ESIP) has adopted as one of its goals to improve overall logistical support of weapon system software.
