The increase in complexity and sophistication of Traction and Auxiliary Systems has created the need for comprehensive control and monitoring facilities as part of train management. Although one solution is the increase the number of train wires; weight, space and inter-vehicle coupling limitations have to be taken into account. An alternative to an increase in the number of train wires is to incorporate data multiplexing techniques, which aloow handling of multiple functions over a single pair of wires. Plessey Controls Limited (PCL= have recently undertaken two separate developments, one for London Underground Limited (LUL) and the other for British Rail (BR) both systems providing control and monitoring facilities using multiplexing techniques. Although both systems are primarily for traction control and monitoring, the LUL System also handles a number of the other train functions using dedicated transmission cables, whereas the BR System handles Traction and Braking only and is constrained by the need to use existing train wires.
