The Distributed Expert Management System (DEMANS) concept has been developed as a means of coordinating the operations of multiple pilot aiding expert systems. The concept currently includes an executive expert system called the Expert Manager and three subordinate systems. The Expert Manager is responsible for maintaining situation awareness and performing integration, planning, and information management functions. Distribution of the management function is a key component of the DEMANS concept. Each expert system has a local manager capable of performing selected integration and decision-making functions. Small specialized mini-experts post their processing results on blackboards for review by the local managers. The expert systems can operate autonomously or can be coupled with the Expert Manager. The Expert Manager reduces subordinate system autonomy when conflicts between systems arise, when higher level decision making is required, or when multiple system outputs must be combined for display to the pilot.
