Spherical gas storage tanks are indispensable for the stable supply of city gas. However, the conventional method of inspecting the weld lines of these tanks is a troublesome process, requiring the complete unloading of the tank and the construction of scaffolds. This process (known as magnetic particle inspection) is labour intension, placing the workmen at considerable risk and it demobilizes a tank for up to six months. In view of these considerations, the authors have developed a new ultrasonic flaw detection technique, that enables both sides of weld lines to be inspected from the outside. In addition, the authors have developed a robot that employs this ultrasonic technique, and is capable of freely travelling along the outside wall of the tank while clinging to the tank wall by suction. In this way it is now possible to inspect the weld lines of a gas storage tank while it is in operation.
