The generation and conditioning of electric power from a dynamic isotope power system (DIPS) for a spacecraft is discussed and an analysis presented in this paper. The DIPS power system is an electric power generation system that uses radioisotope fuel as the heat source, and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) turbine-alternator to convert the heat energy to electrical energy. Three electric generation options, the ac homopolar, Rice-Lundell, and permanent magnet machines, have been considered for selection as the electromechanical energy conversion device. A discussion of control strategies for speed and voltage regulation is presented. The final section of the paper presents DIPS power system modeling and analysis. A description of the mathematical models for alternator, power conditioning devices, and payloads is presented. Results of simulation on a digital computer using a general purpose simulation program and the above mathematical models are summarized.
