Industrial robots and handling devices will be of greatest importance in the next future. Today robots are applied in different industries for various purposes. One field with very low application rates is transportation. Most of the tasks for robots in transportation systems are very complicated and therefore 'intelligent' robots are necessary. Such 'intelligent' robots are equipped with external sensors giving the robot additional informations about its surrounding. The paper starts with definitions and the different types of manipulators. Industrial robots are only a subset of manipulators. In the following the main parts of an industrial robot (arm, drives, gears, gripper, gripping devices, internal and external sensors and the control computer) are shortly described. Starting from a short overview about application of robots in various fields some facts and ideas concerning robots in transportation systems are discussed.
