The surface pressure distribution of a passenger vehicle during an overtaking and passing maneuver was measured during experiments at the IDIADA proving ground. A brief explanation of the process of this simple experiment was given. A simplified illustration of the evolution of the surface pressure at specific snapshots was presented to enable an easy visualization of the aerodynamic effects at place. Overall, it could be shown how the flow field around the test vehicle changed during overtaking and passing manoeuvers leading to asymmetric pressure distribution, influencing lateral acceleration and yawing rates and therefore contributing to vehicle instability. The effect of changing aerodynamic properties by small add-on parts did not lead to a fundamental change of the pressure distribution along the vehicle (the post-processed test result data were not available at the time of completing the paper). A more fundamental modification to the vehicle geometry, i.e. a large rear fin as described by Mayer, et.al. (2007), could be suggested for future tests. Also, whether or not the same results are obtained when the car is overtaking the van instead of the van overtaking the car, as presented in this paper, will be investigated. Moreover, the effects of a bigger support vehicle, using a truck instead of the van, need to be studied. Another interesting aspect would be to compare the presented results to aerodynamic effects on passing trains (i.e Khandhia, et al. (1996)). In summary, the simple test procedure and the measurements provided useful pressure data that will be used to validate CFD results in the future and can lead to a more advanced development tool for future projects.
