Load regulation of an internal combustion engine by the patented OptiVent process is a completely new approach in the development of gasoline engines. To realize this principle an additional variability of the exhaust valves is needed. The air sucked in can flow into the combustion chamber without huge throttle losses and only small pressure losses which clearly reduces the gas exchange losses. In addition there is an increase in the thermal efficiency because of the changed process control. Operating the engine at partial load with separate cylinder switched off brings even more advantages, which are based on three effects, at first the un-throttling, secondly pushing the engine operating point towards the best efficiency point of the working cylinder and last from reducing the pump work of the shut-down cylinders. All these things lead to a reduction in fuel consumption up to 15%. With regard to hybrid vehicles the main advantage of the OptiVent process is the reduction of the engine starting torque, which could save up to 80% compared to a conventional engine start and which also makes the start up more comfortable. Above all there are several other applications for example in commercial vehicles, construction machines and hand guided working equipment, where the valve control could be used as an engine brake system or as basis of a hydraulic hybrid drive. The implementation of the OptiVent process in a gasoline engine and the research in the field of applications are part of a large scaled research project, which is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFB).
