In engine development, four stroke engines prevailed almost exclusively as the only design for passenger car propulsion units. During the decades, the technical evolution lead to an endless number of produced units with a variety of brilliant designs. However, in a four stroke work process, one complete revolution and hence half of the cycle time is required for charge intake and compression. Therefore, it takes two revolutions per cylinder to produce usable work. In contrast to this widespread principle, with the novel working process "External Compression 2 Stroke" (EC2S) each cylinder yields work every single revolution. To achieve this, a great share of the compression is conducted outside the working cylinder, followed by intercooling. With pressure and density of the intake air increased significantly, fresh charge can be injected into the work cylinder in very short time. Therefore, the intake event can be conducted in a fraction of the piston's upwards stroke, after the exhaust event and before the final compression. In this manner, all steps of the four stroke cycle can be accomplished in one revolution, allowing two stroke operation while at the same time maintaining all four stroke cycle advantages Additionally, large scale downsizing will be feasible through providing the same torque with half the number of cylinders compared to a four stroke engine, attaining reduced friction, weight and size. This presentation will concentrate on the fresh charge preparation, charge exchange, mixture formation, combustion, emissions and overall performance.
