In today's competitive market, quietness of passenger cabin and low levels of disturbing vibration felt by the occupants are among the key parameters that decide the success of vehicles. This depends mainly on the type of power train installed on the vehicle and quality of radiated noise by Powertrain. Hence it is a tough challenge for the powertrain engineer to lower noise levels without compromising on other performance parameters and also meet the stringent weight and cost targets. This paper covers the case study conducted on a four cylinder common rail Diesel engine for sound quality refinements. The concern identified during this engine development was rough/harsh noise emanating from the engine compartment which could result in customer dissatisfaction. Test bed level measurements in hemi-anechoic chamber were carried out to confirm the status of noise levels & sound quality parameters and these were compared with targets based on benchmarks. Noise source contribution analysis and source ranking was computed. Further combustion and mechanical noise breakdown (CMB) was also carried out. Based on source ranking and CMB analysis, main contributors identified were cylinder head cover, fuel injection system, oil sump & damper pulley. They were then suitably modified along with EMS calibration optimization. It was observed that with these modifications, overall noise levels were reduced by 5-6 dB with sound quality confirming to the targeted performance both objectively & subjectively.
