The European Commission is sponsoring research to develop technologies for CO2 reduction in the CO2RE project. The objective of the work is to demonstrate a 15 % reduction in CO2emissions compared with a Euro V baseline. This paper concentrates on the work in the CO2RE sub-project on friction reduction. There are two elements of the friction reduction work: friction modeling and measurement on the test engine (Daimler OM936). Ricardo's friction model is described and the results of calculations of the individual piston rings are given. It is seen that a reduction of about 30 % in frictional mean-effective pressure can be achieved by changes to the piston ring geometry and tangential load. The methodology for measuring fuel consumption is described. Accurate and repeatable measurements have been able to discriminate between alternative piston and ring geometries. Improvements of up to 1 % in fuel consumption have been recorded with acceptable oil consumption and blow-by based on short tests. The effect of a 25 % reduction in oil viscosity was a reduction in motored mean-effective pressure but no improvement in fuel consumption. Reasons for this observation are given. The paper concludes with a summary of the work to complete the CO2RE project and a short description of Ricardo's investigations into an alternative thermodynamic cycle which has potential for improved thermal efficiency in the longer term.
