The major target in vehicle development is to find an optimum NVH performance on system level under given boundary conditions like cost, weight or emission. To better accomplish this task, NVH needs to be considered during the entire development process. One key point is to provide an efficient acoustic tool chain and parameters to support the daily - of non-NVH engineers to ensure that NVH is monitored and optimized during development. A very important example is vehicle calibration. Calibration engineers have to monitor and optiminze a huge number of parameters such as emission components, parameters relevant for fuel consumption or driveability. Beside this, also NVH should be monitored and optimized throughout the development. Therefore the NVH departments have to provide tools and parameters to support calibration engineers and to ensure that NVH is "on the screen" throughout the entire development process. Main task of these tools is to deliver objective and measureable values that inform the calibration engineer about the NVH behavior of the current calibration. To give an example a tool for objective evaluation of combustion knocking especially for Diesel engines and DI Gasoline engines based on cylinder pressure, structure borne noise or airborne noise measurements will be used. Main focus of this publication is therefore to present what is necessary to provide such supporting tool chains and parameters and how those could be used in the development process to optimize the overall vehicle NVH behavior.
