The comfort aspect in the vehicle interior is becoming increasingly important for the automotive industry in order to distinguish as a superior manufacturer against competitors. The seat is the most significant and permanent contact surface between driver and car. Therefore it can be assumed that the perception of seating comfort is an important quality feature to stimulate the purchasing decision for the costumer. One part of seating comfort is the climatic aspect, especially the thermo-physiological microclimate between driver and seat. So far there is no unified measurement scenario to determine the thermo-physiological behaviour of car seats. However methods which are standardised used to measure thermo-physiological comfort of clothing can be adapted. By using thermal sweating manikins it should be possible to ascertain thermo-physiological parameters of seating systems as well as parts of it. The aim of the project "investigations on thermo-physiological comfort in automobile seating" is to develop a measurement scenario which will provide information on how to determine indicators which will be used to quantify the quality of the thermo-physiological behaviour of a seating systems. The heat and moisture management of the different used materials and their layer construction can influence the driver's comfort feeling. In the preliminary work it is important to understand how moisture and heat will be transferred and accumulated through the different layers of a seat. Therefore moisture and temperature sensors have been positioned between the layers. The layers are as followed: the upholstery with 5 mm foam enclosure, the foam slab stock and the metal plate. The used measurement system is the sweating bottom. This system simulates the human bottom with a 3D-measuring head, an aluminium full mould. This measuring head is able to simulate the human skin temperature and can also sweat through integrated sweating pores. A jersey sweat suit distributes the pumped out water through the measuring head. The apparatus allows the adjustment of different contact forces for static and dynamic measurements. The measured sample is a seat cushion in which nine moisture and temperature sensors are placed in. Under determined conditions the 3D-measuring head applies a force on the seat cushion and different sweat rates are examined. The ventilation effect is also measured. This effect describes the up and down movement of the driver while driving a car. Therefore a dynamic application of forces is necessary. The poster shows the first results of the running project.
