Introducing a 48 V supply voltage to the vehicle power net will be an important vehicle component to reduce fleet emissions and to tremendously increase the power net capability. Besides start/stop functionalities and sailing other high power consumers can also be adapted to 48 V systems which significantly improve vehicle efficiency. In order to fit the 48V systems in existing vehicle architectures, packaging constraints can be very dominant. With this background many Belt driven Starter Generators (BSGs) have an integrated inverter. Following this approach, a cost-effective solution is the integration of 48 V battery and DC/DC into one unit, which is called "Powerpack". The 48V Powerpack enables an easier integration into the vehicle and links the 12 V with the 48 V board net. Based on customer requirements, the 48 V Powerpack consists of a modular and scalable battery design and is applicable with different power levels of the DC/DC. The integration of both components (battery and DC/DC) allows a distinct simplification of the overall thermal management. SK Continental E-Motion provides deep system know-how and long lasting experience with regards to pouch cell and DC/DC integration into a battery pack. The 48 V Powerpack is an innovative solution integrating 48V battery and DC/DC into one unit, saving cables, cooling components and assembly effort at the OEM. The product offers further development potential for the future, as further integration of battery and DC/DC can be envisaged, which makes future Powerpack generations smaller, lighter and cheaper. The 48 V System and 48 V Powerpack presented here is one of the key innovations in the product range for mild-hybrid vehicles. It is an additional technological solution which combines battery system and DC/DC and enables the realization of an additional 48 V board-net system with hybrid functionality. State-of-the-art technologies provide the needed building elements such as Li-Ion cells, DC/DC, a battery management system including control algorithms, cooling and assembly concepts. The resulting 48 V Powerpack solution provides the needed power capability and energy content for the whole lifetime of the vehicle. Depending on customer performance requirements and mounting location in the vehicle, appropriate solutions need to be developed. However, to maintain economics of scale and to develop a design which is applicable to different vehicles, a modular concept at cell, system, and power level is necessary. Thus, to integrate both components in one housing (in flat or cubical design) seems to be a good solution to approach these requirements.
